They are some of the new and almost-like-new faces we'll be seeing next week at the New York fashion shows. This is crunch time for casting directors, with meetings over the weekend, as more new models arrive in town and people start making decisions about whom they want on their runways. [title] => Fashion's Night Out Sept. 10 NYC
[summary] => Most people don't remember their first Fashion's Night Out--and with good reason. More than 800 retailers stayed open late to support and celebrate the fashion industry over a soundtrack of corks popping, Belve flowing, and text messages calling in sick flying to bosses. If this year's Fall Fashion Week, expected to be the largest public fashion show to date, with more than 150 top models stalking the runways and seats for more than 1,500 spectators, is any indication, Fashion's Night Out is equally going to be one for the books. By Jimmy Im for Blackbook MagazineFor one night only on September 10th, New York City's local retailers will stay open late, hosting unique in-store events, DJs, customized cocktails, fashionistas galore, celebrity appearances, and more--and there are almost a thousand stores participating. Also during this time, NYC & Company is partnering with 40 fashionable hotels to show visitors the couture side of the city. Deals include discounted rates, gift cards, continental breakfasts, complimentary cocktails, and Fashion's Night Out apparel and canvas tote bags for shopping sprees the night of. Participating hotels include Fashion 26, Hudson New York, and The Pierre New York (a Taj hotel), among other distinctive hotels. The streets will be flooded with fashionable crowds all evening, so please don't wear your Tevas....

[title] => music/ Street Drum Corps (SDC) rock!
[summary] => Percussion punk rock masters. Street Drum Corps// From John Bonham to Clyde Stubblefield to ?uestlove, the drum has always been the backbone of any successful group. Hell, go further back in time, when drums were at the center of any tribal ritual. It's carnal. Primeval. A good song hits you in the head. A good beat nails you in the stomach. So in an era of squeaky-clean, polished production, Los Angeles' Street Drum Corps (SDC) are more important than ever. What started as, to quote co-founder Adam Alt, "just a couple of guys playing buckets at parties," has quickly morphed into a mini-empire, complete with affiliates around the world and grandiose, theatrical shows in the works. The trio, consisting of Alt, brother Bobby and Frank Zummo, is currently preparing their Interscope Records debut (and third overall), while their energetic rock-band-meets-performance-art sets continue to astound and mesmerize anyone with the good fortune to catch them.Bobby and Adam Alt had each been drumming since they were 10 and had played in various bands since high school. After founding Bobby and Adam Alt's Drum Experiment, utilizing, as Bobby puts it, "pots, pans, found instruments or whatever we could get our hands on for a new sound," the pair met up with Zummo, a recent L.A. transplant playing in "trashcan bands" up and down the East Coast in a show called Re:Percussion. Their goals in the beginning were modest: "After we met Frank, it was...

[title] => John Hill, Jr at THIS LOS ANGELES
[summary] => The fairly new and charming gallery THIS LOS ANGELES in Highland Park has an amazing exhibit up right now. "DRAWN" features the very detailed ink drawings of John Hill, Jr. John is a graduate of the MFA program at UNC, Chapel Hill and he lives and works in Charlotte, NC today. The basic concept for the show was to exhibit works he has drawn "directly with pen onto paper without the aid of plans or reference material." He compared them to pages in a sketchbook when I spoke with him about the very resolved pieces. Which is crazy, because when you see sketches, usually there are lines that may not be finished or not very rendered or even misplaced, but that's not the case in John's work here. The drawings seem methodically thought out due to their perfection and fine attention to detail. John's approach is simple, he just sit down and starts drawing, letting whatever comes to his mind flow out through his hand and onto the paper. Recurring images I found in the work include animals, horns, things that float or fly, and plenty of phallic objects. John explained to me that he thinks a lot of what comes up are images and thoughts from the dark recesses of his mind, from adolescence and from pockets of his mind that may have obsessed on certain ideas or concepts. It all makes sense, even though when you look at...

[summary] => Hey Everyone! Hope the month of May is treating you right so far. We're still reeling from our 17th anniversary celebration. Is it possible to be addicted to reminiscing? I guess the obvious solution is to make some new memories, and that we will! On another note, earlier this year The Donnas released an exclusive track: "Can't Keep It A Secret" for an organization called The Right Track: Tunes to TargetCancer. This charity includes music download opportunities to help raise funds to research and develop treatments for rare cancers. Well guys, the second bunch of songs is about to come out and included in the mix is the very first release for my project Born Angry. The song is called "Aim Twice, Shoot Once" and I recorded it with Darian Zahedi from Mack Winston and the Reflections. You might remember them from Desert Moon 2, as they opened for us with an awesome set at Pappy and Harriet's. I'm really excited about how this song came out, and I sincerely hope you like it too. This is a great cause, and we're happy to be involved. Feel free to poke around and check out the other artists too, this is a great collection of musicians. Also, if you haven't had a chance to download "Can't Keep It A Secret" yet, now is your chance, all over again! Take care and enjoy the music!...

[title] => Everything Has Meaning: A Q&A with Mr. Brainwash
[summary] => I first met Thierry Guetta, otherwise known as Mr. Brainwash, in 2006 at the opening of the elusive British street artist Banksy's Los Angeles show "Barely Legal." It was impossible not to notice the eccentric, camera-wielding Frenchman as he buzzed around the crowded warehouse, enthusiastically capturing footage for what he said was his long-time passion project--a documentary about the mysterious world of street art. I didn't think much of the encounter until several years later, by which time Guetta (fully assuming the Mr. Brainwash moniker) had emerged as a wildly successful (and controversial) street artist in his own right. With a portfolio of work that has quickly gained renown, Guetta routinely sells out solo shows in New York and Los Angeles (where it's not uncommon for his limited-edition pieces to come with six-figure price tags). And now the camera he once wielded has been turned on himself: He appears as the mischievous main "character" in Banksy's directorial debut, the docu-spoof Exit Through the Gift Shop, which opened in theaters over the weekend. I recently sat down with Mr. Brainwash in his Los Angeles studio to find out what everyone else apparently wants to know: What makes him click? GOOD: What first attracted you to the world of street art?MR. BRAINWASH: I've always loved art and have always surrounded myself with it. I began creating [pop] art in 1989 and decided to stop in 1993; a few years later I started filming [artists] because the human...

[summary] => In 1970 a little known musician by the name of Linda Perhacs was launched on the music scene with an extraordinary rock-folk album titled "Parallelograms." The record industry, being the exploitative mass-candy-making machine that it is...attempted to morph the lovely Linda into a version of Joni Mitchell. This, turns out, was not Linda's idea of making music. Imagine that. So Linda abandoned the music world and decided she'd continue to help people through her work as a dental hygienist. No, really. Note to self: find out which LA dentist Linda works for and schedule an appointment...pronto. Linda's soothing voice and healing energy, I imagine, would make any dental visit a thousand times more enjoyable than it would ever be...

[summary] => Normal 0 0 1 876 4998 41 9 6137 11.1282 0 0 0 Introducing Melcher Media: The Impresario of Pop-up Books New York, NY, August 10, 2009--Once exclusive to the realm of youngsters, the pop-up book is no longer child's play. Award-winning content producer and book packager Melcher Media has mastered the art of the movable book for adults by tapping into our longing for the fantastical object and giving it a modern-day edge. With the forthcoming October 2009 release of Wicked The Musical: A Pop-Up Compendium of Splendiferous Delight and Thrillifying Intrigue, based on the smash-hit, record-breaking, Tony Award-winning musical, the Melcher Media pop-up books have accessed our love for analog in an increasingly digital world. "If books are going to compete with digital media they need to rediscover their physical presence," observes Charles Melcher, founder and publisher of Melcher Media. "Pop-up books create an experience that you can't replicate on the screen. They are truly physical objects--they are made by hand, made by craftspeople, made the old fashioned way. There is a physical chain from the maker to the user, which is lost in our digital age, and in many ways, is even more relevant now." Melcher is reliving his childhood, in more ways than one. Growing up with dyslexia, Melcher's impassioned parents brought him reading materials of all kinds--from pop-up books to comic books. "Books were always an interactive, multi-sensorial experience. I would hear, speak,...

[summary] => The 2009 Autumn/Winter Make-up Collection created by Nicolas Degennes was inspired by his appreciation for everything soft and romantic. The artistic trend born in the 19th century "Romantiques" motivated Nicolas to create a hot palette for one of Falls hottest make-up trends staying natural but adding that non-dramatic edge to your Fall look. The palette is romantic soft colour. Soft and gentle pink, with fresh and subtle accents of Blue, coral and nude tones. Leaving a soft natural romantic feminine look, with a natural blush on the lips. [title] => Art and Soul Tattoos
[summary] => It's always exciting to find a thriving artistic business run by a woman, one such place is Art and Soul Tattoos. Erika Stanley has been tattoing since 1993 and established Art and Soul Tattoo in 1996. Their myspace page has a ton of inspiring shots of her work and the other artists at the shop like Adam Kilss (who makes killer paintings too), Joby Cummings, Danny Chan, and Scott Stollar, as well as other international guests like Malika Rose and Jake Fraser. Their location, on Robertson south of Pico, always gets a weird reaction, but it's actually a cool little stretch with small local neighborhood oriented businesses, way different than the Kitson and Ivy vibe a few miles up the same street (hurl!). Erika's work spans from Japanese to traditional American, but I'm especially blown away by her pin-ups and animal portraits. Erika in the new location, mid-move. Jake Fraser tattoing my tour manager Ed in the background! Here's the info in case you can't get it off their myspace page, 2600 S Robertson Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90034 (310) 202-7203There's one on Ft. Meyers too, so don't be fooled!Oh and did I mention that they have team spirit too? These are some of their bowling trophies on display at their new location freshly opened on the corner of Robertson, just two doors down from their old shop. Striiiike!!!...

[title] => Performance Rights Act: Fair Play for Air Play
[summary] => I just got back to CA from DC where a great organization called musicFIRST brought out over 100 figures from the music industry including my band The Donnas (and Suzanne Vega!!) to lobby on The Hill for performance rights. Trolling the government tunnels: Basically in US, broadcast radio (AM and FM) only pays royalties to song publishers, not performers/rights holders. Now, doesn't seem like that big of a deal when Britney Spears doesn't get paid and her songwriters do, because she is making lots of money from many other sources, but it is her right to collect a fair portion on revenue that she generates with her performance, and it does matter financially to smaller musicians especially talented and overlooked studio musicians, who depend on every source of income combined to pay rent and bills. This is also a fairness issue because all other forms of radio, including internet and satellite, pay performance rights while broadcast radio refuses to update its' policies. The US doesn't pay these royalties to foreign artists either, so most other countries have a ban preventing US artists from collecting international royalties. Radio opposes this vehemently saying the promotion value of airplay helps the performers/labels enough, but as I always say "my landlord doesn't accept exposure units!" Congresswoman Diane Watson (33rd district, including my very own neighborhood: Los Feliz) said she's in favor of the bill which will see it's next hearing on Mar 12. musicFIRST's...

Where the enjoyment of the music becomes a visceral experience as much, or if not more than, a heady one. When I listen to Gaby Hernandez's debut album "When Love," I am transported into a calm, reflective, hopeful state where - as one of my favorite songs on the album is titled - love will find the way. It's not an album that examines love in its initial form. It is a celebration of love, a very self-reflective, longing, secure, matured, and eternal love. Hernandez has spent years...

Besides the big celebs Japan also has a tendency to randomly pick (no offense to anyone) slightly less well known people, like let's say, French singer Alizee for a cookie ad, or recently, Emmy Rossum for Mt.Rainier Caffe Latte. Probably inspired by Scarlett Johansson's horrible Starbucks commercial (sorry I could not find it), Mt.Rainier decided to find itself a star as well and ended up with Emmy.
